Sew Start to Finish Techniques with Geraldine Sykes

Come along and join Geraldine to improve your sewing knowledge with essential techniques in clothing creation.

You can attend one day at £35, 2 days at £65, 3 days at £90 or all four days at £110.  If you are booking 2 or 3 days, please tell us in the notes which dates you would like to attend.

Full day 10am - 4pm

Day 1 - 30 May 2024:  The Joy of Embellishment and Measurement

This day is all about decoration of a garment and includes:

- applique - applying fabric onto fabric
- working with lace
- using the embroidery stitches on your sewing machine to decorate
 
Plus some of the difficult issues around the use of commercial patterns whether mainstream or indie:
 
- how to measure the body correctly
- how to read and use a commercial pattern
- selecting the correct fabric for your garment
- select and construct seams suitable for the chosen fabric and finishing the seam.

Day 2 - 4 July 2024:  Tying it Together

Knowing what fastenings are available and how to put them into a garment can make the garment move from a well made outfit to that WOW piece of clothing and includes:

- selecting the correct fastenings for your garment
- looking at different fastenings to use
- knowing which is the most suitable zip to use for a chosen garment
- insert 3 different types of zips into different fabrics
- how to sew on hooks and eyes, press studs and decorative frogs.
 
Day 3 - 29 August 2024:  What a Difference a Pocket or Button Can Make
 
Buttons and pockets don's seem a logical mix until you realise what a welt pocket of bound buttonhole might do.  The day includes:
 
- pockets in general
- buttons, covered buttons, buttonholes including a welt buttonhole
- making pockets to insert into trousers and jackets and patch pockets to shirts and blouses.
 
Day 4 - 31 October 2024:  How to Look Flat and Square
 
Sleeves, hems, facings and collars can be a real challenge until you master interfacings and which one to use when.  Plus getting everything to sit flat ad remain so whilte stitching.  The day includes:
 
- choosing the right interfacing for your project
- the need for pressing
- types of sleeves
- inserting sleeves
- the best way to sew on facings
- making collars work
- hems.

In addition to spending your time crafting, Tudor Rose Patchwork offers a special lunchtime menu O For Coffee for students.  You can choose from a selection of jacket potatoes, sandwhiches, paninis, toasties and soups.

 

Cancellation Policy:

  • Should Tudor Rose Patchwork have to cancel a group meeting you will receive a full refund or a transfer to the next expected date (with your agreement).
  • Should you wish to cancel your attendance on a group meeting, please phone or e-mail us  by 5pm of the day prior to the group meeting to arrange a payment transfer.  If cancelling for a Monday group meeting, please phone or e-mail by 5pm on Saturday.
  • If a pattern is availabe and you cannot attend any paid for day then Tudor Rose patchwork will arrange for you to receive the pattern.
  • Patterns remain the property of the tutor and should not be copied, passed on or used for teaching purposes without  the permission of the tutor.
